I liked the Brave New World connection - it reminds me of the scene on the Reservation in ch. 8 where Old Mitsima is teaching John how to hand-build a clay pot: "To fashion, to give form, to feel his fingers gaining in skill and power--this gave him an extraordinary pleasure."<br /><br />Great link to Shopcraft - I'm reading it now and loving it. Takes me back to my blacksmithing days and even further to Robert Frost Intermediate where I cast an aluminum model of a derringer and mounted it on a walnut plaque.
